Search engine optimization starts at home, during the initial stages of web design. Sure, you can forget your site̢۪s SEO and focus entirely on off-site SEO, such as article submission, but you̢۪ll have extra work cut out for you. Do a good job on your site̢۪s own optimization and you̢۪ll have a head start over your competition straight out of the gate.
One big thing to keep in mind when optimizing your page is that search engines are constantly changing what they find important and what they don̢۪t, Google actually updates their algorithms multiple times every day.
Another important tip is to know that Google looks at MANY different points when determining your page rank, and they only release some of them to the public. This prevents webmasters from building a site that̢۪s created for the search engines and not the end users.
So what is on-page SEO? On-page SEO is the process of setting up your page so the search engines know what your site is about and what keywords are your priority. This is usually done during the beginning stages of the website design process, making life easier further down the road.
If a page has a lot of different information and talks about many different subjects then the search engines won̢۪t think the site is about anything in particular and thus won̢۪t give you high rankings for anything except possibly some very rarely searched for keywords that happen to appear on your page.
This brings me to â€Å“black hat†techniques vs. â€Å“white hat†techniques.
â€Å“Black hat†is the idea of creating your site with the intention of fooling the search engines in some way or another. Some traditional methods included cramming your pages with specific keywords, many more than would exist on any ‘normal’ site or adding keywords that are the same color as the background and thus being invisible. Another more advanced method involved making two pages, one that would appear if the guest of the site was a search engine spider and one that would appear if it was a human user.
â€Å“White hat†means that you are staying within the search engines’ guidelines (normally Google’s), following the rules and not doing anything that breaks their rules. It’s always recommended to only use these proper techniques, if Google detects that you’re using bad methods of SEO (and they usually do) you will be punished with a severe loss of page rank.
These methods bring me to the concept of the â€Å“magic bulletâ€. If you look around you will find many SEO â€Å“gurus†selling the â€Å“magic bullet†to high ranking. Just know that there is no such thing. These â€Å“gurus†are either using blackhat techniques (don’t use them if your online business is actually important to you) or they’re only repeating all the same stuff that’s available online for free. The only real way to get high rankings that will last is through proper, whitehat, SEO, both on-page and off-site.
I discuss in more detail both on-page SEO and off-site SEO in other articles, so keep an eye out for them. Just remember, there are legitimate SEO companies out there that will help you with ranking, they can be of great use if you have the money to spend. If you do go that route, be sure you insist that they NEVER use any blackhat methods on your site.
